There are hundreds of thousands of<\/em>
\nwonderful environmental initiatives out there,<\/em><\/p>\n

that we all support, <\/em>
\nthat all aim to protect our Earth.<\/em><\/p>\n

This campaign<\/em>
\nto make ecocide an international crime…<\/em><\/p>\n

can unlock the potential of all of those.<\/em><\/p>\n

In 2010 I proposed into the United Nations <\/em>
\nthat we criminalize ecocide.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ecocide is the extensive damage,<\/em>
\ndestruction to or loss of ecosystems.<\/em><\/p>\n

And what I propose is an amendment…<\/em><\/p>\n

to possibly the most important legal document <\/em>
\nwe have in the world: the Rome Statute.<\/em><\/p>\n

That document sets out the<\/em>
\nexisting international crimes.<\/em><\/p>\n

And I propose that ecocide become <\/em>
\na standalone international crime…<\/em><\/p>\n

alongside genocide, war crimes <\/em>
\nand crimes against humanity.<\/em><\/p>\n

So how does this work?<\/em>
\nTo amend the Rome Statute…<\/em><\/p>\n

it simply requires a head <\/em>
\nor heads of state to propose that amendment.<\/em><\/p>\n

Who has the greatest incentive to do that?<\/em><\/p>\n

Small climate vulnerable states…<\/em><\/p>\n

like the small islands in the Pacific<\/em>
\nwho are going underwater…<\/em><\/p>\n

who are feeling the sharp end <\/em>
\nof climate ecocide.<\/em><\/p>\n

But these are the very states <\/em>
\nthat don’t have the funds…<\/em><\/p>\n

to fly over to the Hague, to New York<\/em>
\nto go to the conferences and be present…<\/em><\/p>\n

at the International Criminal Court <\/em>
\nto make that amendment.<\/em><\/p>\n

So our campaign is funding them…<\/em><\/p>\n

and it’s funding them on the basis <\/em>
\nof a legal document, a Trust Fund document.<\/em><\/p>\n

When you sign up you’re gifting funds <\/em>
\nto help this process,<\/em><\/p>\n

but you’re also legally<\/em>
\nbecoming an Earth Protector.<\/em><\/p>\n

So in a few short months…<\/em><\/p>\n

with a tiny team of volunteers<\/em>
\nwe’ve really come a long way.<\/em><\/p>\n

We’ve accompanied small island representatives <\/em>
\ninto the International Criminal Court.<\/em><\/p>\n

We’ve created enormous visibility<\/em>
\nin the United Nations.<\/em><\/p>\n

This is a legacy mission like no other.<\/em><\/p>\n

It stops the cycle of harm <\/em>
\nat the highest level…<\/em><\/p>\n

and it unlocks the potential of countless <\/em>
\nother initiatives to protect our Earth.<\/em><\/p>\n

But you know, it’s more than that.<\/em><\/p>\n

I can’t square it with my conscience <\/em>
\nto walk away from this.<\/em><\/p>\n

What about for you?<\/em><\/p>\n

For me, I think I came to this <\/em>
\nthrough my children.<\/em><\/p>\n

You know, they’re going <\/em>
\nto be growing up in this world.<\/em><\/p>\n

It’s going to be a world that we have no idea <\/em>
\nwhat it’s going to look like.<\/em><\/p>\n

And like you, I cannot sit by <\/em>
\nand see serious harm continuing…<\/em><\/p>\n

knowing that my children <\/em>
\nare going to grow up in that.<\/em><\/p>\n

So for me, it’s about the Earth as I know it,<\/em><\/p>\n

but it’s also about the Earth that’s going <\/em>
\nto be lived in by the future generations…<\/em><\/p>\n

by our children <\/em>
\nand our children’s children.<\/em><\/p>\n

– We’re gonna make it happen.<\/em>
\n– We are!<\/em><\/p>\n

And we’re going to find people<\/em>
\nwho can help us make it happen.<\/em><\/p>\n

– Absolutely!<\/em>
